Additionally, demolitions must be videographed, and officials who violate the rules will be held in contempt and face fines. The court’s ruling came in response to petitions challenging bulldozer actions in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. It criticized the practice of demolishing properties owned by individuals accused of crimes, stating that depriving people of shelter violates their fundamental rights. The ruling also emphasized that it is unjust to punish family members or neighbors for the actions of one individual. Opposition parties welcomed the verdict, seeing it as a setback for the BJP, which had supported the bulldozer tactic in states it governs. The Supreme Court’s order now ensures that demolitions can no longer be carried out indiscriminately, signaling a shift in how justice is administered.
