There have been dozens of versions of this effect over the years. In Jinx#74, 1940, Henry Christ started the modern handling of the trick, where two groups of four of a kind changed places. The first time I saw the cards change positions and the number of cards change (three and three changing into groups of two and four) was in the mid-seventies by Michael Skinner. Michael mentioned Persi Diaconis and Dai Vernon got him working on the plot. I worked out most of this handle a few days after Mike showed me his version.
