The Large-tailed Nightjar (Caprimulgus macrurus) is a nocturnal bird species found in parts of Asia, including Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Belonging to the nightjar family, Caprimulgidae, this bird is known for its cryptic plumage and crepuscular or nocturnal habits.
Adult Large-tailed Nightjars typically measure around 28 to 33 centimeters in length, making them one of the larger species of nightjars. They have mottled gray and brown plumage on their upperparts, which provides excellent camouflage against tree bark and leaf litter. Their underparts are paler, with subtle streaking and barring for added camouflage.
Large-tailed Nightjars primarily inhabit various types of habitats, including forests, woodlands, scrublands, and grasslands. They are often found roosting on the ground during the day, relying on their excellent camouflage to remain hidden from predators. At night, they become active, hunting for insects, moths, and other nocturnal prey using their wide mouths and long, sensitive bristles around their bills to capture flying insects.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Large-tailed Nightjars is their distinctive call, which consists of a series of melodious whistles and churring sounds. Males may also perform aerial displays during the breeding season, flying high into the sky and then diving back down while calling to attract mates.
During the breeding season, Large-tailed Nightjars may form monogamous pairs and construct simple nests on the ground, often just a shallow depression lined with leaf litter or twigs. The female lays a clutch of one or two eggs, which are incubated by both parents. The cryptic coloration of the eggs provides additional camouflage against potential predators.
While the Large-tailed Nightjar is not considered globally threatened, it may face localized threats from habitat loss and degradation due to deforestation, logging, and changes in land use. Conservation efforts aimed at preserving and restoring suitable habitats are essential for ensuring the continued survival of this fascinating nocturnal bird species.
