So we had to explain where Korea was before we could even talk about our music. And that was the reality. We overcame those barriers and now I'm here today sharing this precious moment with you."

"K-pop is not just a genre of music. It is a 360-degree total package of music, dance, performance, visual style, storytelling, music video and even social media. K-pop success didn't happen because one single culture was better. K-pop success came from respecting diversity and embracing world cultures, but still holding onto Korea's unique identity."

STORYLINE:
K-pop superstar RM from the global hit Korean band BTS spoke on Wednesday at the business leaders' meeting held at the APEC summit in Gyeongju, South Korea.

Arriving on stage to loud cheering and audience members snapping pictures on their phones, RM spoke about the fight to put South Korea on the map and the journey BTS took to reach success.

He attributed K-pop success to "respecting diversity and embracing world cultures, but still holding onto Korea's unique identity."

RM ended his speech with a request to APEC leaders and guests: to help and give financial support to budding creators around the world.
