India has quietly proposed a move that could reshape global finance.

According to sources, the Reserve Bank of India has suggested linking the central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) of BRICS nations to facilitate cross-border trade and tourism payments.

If implemented, this would allow BRICS countries to settle transactions directly using their official digital currencies — reducing reliance on the US dollar and dollar-dominated financial systems.

The proposal is expected to be placed on the agenda of the 2026 BRICS Summit, which India will host. It comes at a time when geopolitical tensions, sanctions, and trade wars are accelerating, and when Washington has openly warned against efforts to bypass the dollar.

Former US President Donald Trump has previously described BRICS as “anti-American” and threatened tariffs on countries aligning with the bloc.

India, however, is pursuing a careful strategy. Rather than calling for de-dollarisation, New Delhi is framing the move as an efficiency-driven, technical solution — quietly expanding its influence within BRICS while avoiding direct confrontation with the West.
