The moon's temperature forecast is typically not pleasant, with temperatures reaching up to 280 degrees Fahrenheit at night and boiling at day time. However, a new study suggests that the moon's unique features could provide an escape from the extreme temperatures.



A team of planetary scientists from UCLA used thermal imaging data collected by NASA's LRO spacecraft to study the conditions inside the lunar pits. They discovered that the temperatures in these areas, which are typically around 63 degrees Fahrenheit, are consistent throughout the year. The researchers' findings were published in a journal entitled Geophysical Research Letters.



Tyler Horvath, a student at UCLA, said that the proposed pit could be an underground cave or lava tube that could be used by astronauts. It would also provide them with ideal temperatures and protection from radiation and cosmic rays.
