Black Codes/ Jim Crow - 1865 to modern day Civil Rights era and some could even argue how these policies still extend to some Black Americans today.

Mississippi was the first state to pass Black Codes


Examples of Black Codes:

Black people having to show PROOF OF EMPLOYMENT!! EVERY JANUARY or run the risk of being ARRESTED — this was called ‘Annual Labor Contracting’

Restricted Black people right to own property and the type of property they could own.

Restricted Black people from owning businesses

Restricted Black people from moving freely through PUBLIC spaces

Black people paid a tax just for being Black ! AFTER THE CIVIL WAR!!!! ---thats LUDICROUS!!

It was Illegal for Black people to bear arms. (Even though they were killing us at record numbers and nothing was being done about it)

Black people were prevented from buying liquor

Black people could not testify in court unless in cases concerning other Black people.

and the list goes on.....


The punishment for these crimes were arrest, fines, and being legally bound to labour depending on the crime. Reconstruction is said to have put an end to the Black Codes but history shows that these codes and laws just evolved over time.
