This is the World's Deepest Hole. And Inside It, Scientists Found Something They Never Expected.

So most people think the world's deepest human made hole, looks like this. But even though you can see better in a wider hole, wide holes are hard to dig. So the Russian Kola Superdeep Borehole is actually only 23 centimetres across. But even at that size, on the way down,

scientists encountered some surprising problems.

You see, while drilling, it got so hot that the equipment started melting. And at on top of that, the rocks started to act more like plastic than rocks. So like other exploration projects,

the scientists had invent new tech.

First, they needed new kind of drill bit that only spins at the tip. Then they needed a system to lubricate the drill with pressurised mud. And of course they needed new sensors that can withstand those temperatures. All this let them discover a new kind of water which formed from squeezing oxygen and hydrogen out of rocks.
