The Hymn to Oberdan was composed in Trieste following the execution of the Trieste irredentist Guglielmo Oberdan, protagonist of a failed attack on Emperor Francis Joseph of Habsburg (Franz).
The verses of the song praise the death of the Austro-Hungarian emperor.
The version we know was collected by Cesare Bermani in Novara, according to the testimony of a man who had heard it from the infantrymen during the taking of Gorizia in August 1916.
