October 9, 2024 would have been FSU law professor Dan Markel's 52nd birthday. However, he was murdered by hired hitmen on July 18, 2014 after going through a contentious divorce and custody case. His ex-wife Wendi Adelson wanted to move away from Tallahassee with their sons, but Judge Barbara Hobbs had denied her motion with prejudice the previous year. In this August 2022 interview, Dan's mother Ruth Markel, a noted author and experienced businesswoman, talked about her son and "The Unveiling," her book about his life, dealing with the court and trials, and her grieving process. Dan Markel's former mother-in-law Donna Adelson is still in Leon County jail, awaiting trial for her role in the murder for hire. Donna's son Charlie Adelson was convicted and sentenced to life last year. Wendi Adelson has been named by the State as a co-conspirator but has not been charged with any crimes so far. Some also believe that Donna's husband Harvey Adelson, a retired dentist, was also involved in the murder plot; he too has not been charged.
