Serverless technologies such as AWS Lambda, API Gateway and DynamoDB make it easy to build highly resilient applications in the cloud. Out of the box, your application is deployed to multiple availability zones, giving you a great baseline for resilience.

But you're still vulnerable to region-wide outages.

To protect against these rare incidents, you can go a step further and make your application multi-region, ideally in an active-active configuration. This way, there is no manual failover when one of the regions fails. The great thing about building multi-region active-active applications using serverless technologies is that there is very little cost overhead compared with serverful applications. Because you only pay for usage, not uptime. So as long as the total throughput has not changed, you will not pay a dime more than a single-region application.
