Polarization is a very important property of electromagnetic (EM) waves, and lots of efforts have been made to control and manipulate it through artificially designed subwavelength structures. Although polarization of the EM waves can be manipulated through conventional methods such as by using the optical activity of crystals and the Faraday effect, devices based on conventional techniques are largely handicapped due to their bulky size, narrow bandwidth, and incident angle dependent response. To achieve the polarization control of the EM waves over small distances and wide bandwidths, miniaturized artificial structures must be realized. Artificial structures called metamaterials exhibit exotic electromagnetic properties that are not found in natural materials. A two-dimensional (2-D) analogue of a metamaterial generally known as metasurfaces has been found to be of potential interest for polarization control and miniaturization
