Описание к видео Berg Lyric Suite (Galimir Quartet, c. 1935)

Berg: Lyric Suite, for string quartet (1926)
The Galimir String Quartet of Vienna:
Felix Galimir, violin I
Adrielle Galimir, violin II
Renée Galimir, viola
Marguerite Galimir, cello

Recorded c. 1935-36, in Paris, on Polydor 78-rpm matrices 1088/9 HPP, and 1092/7 GPP. Issued in France as Polydor 516.659 through 516.662, and in Great Britain (in December, 1936) as Decca CA-8244 through CA-8247. In the USA, the set was issued c. 1937 as Brunwick-Polydor set BP-2 (records 95006 through 95009), and in slide automatic sequence as set BP-2A (records 95010 through 95013). This was presumbaly withdrawn when CBS purchased the American Record Corporation (of which both Columbia and Brunswick were a part) in 1939. The set was reissued c. 1947, by Vox (which company had inherited Brunswick's licensing agreement with Polydor), as Set 181 (records 12017 through 12020, in drop automatic sequence), using dubbings of the French matrices. All of these issues refer to the work by its French title, "Suite Lyrique". My source is the Brunswick-Polydor manual sequence set, pressed from the original matrices.

Berg's Lyric Suite is in six movements:

1. Allegretto giovale
2. Andante amoroso (at 3:03)
3. Allegro misterioso (at 8:04)
4. Adagio appassionato (at 11:42)
5. Presto delirando (at 17:54)
6. Largo desolato (at 21:46)

This was the first-ever recording of a work by Alban Berg.

The Galimir Quartet was composed of Felix Galimir (1910-1999) and his three sisters, who learned the Berg "Lyric Suite" while they were students at the Vienna Conservatory in the late 1920s. Berg himself appears to have spent some time coaching the siblings as they were learning it; Felix, in a New York Times article of January 11, 1981 (available for reading online) remembered him as being "warm and encouraging."
