Microsoft Excel Tutorial - Set Defaults for Future Excel Workbooks

Welcome to another episode of the MrExcel podcast, where we bring you the best tips and tricks for mastering Excel. In this episode, we'll be discussing workbook default settings and how you can save time by customizing them to your liking. One of my all-time favorite tips is customizing default settings for new workbooks. Every time I create a new workbook, I find myself going through the same steps to make it just the way I like it. But with a few simple customizations, you can save yourself a lot of time and frustration.

Let's start with the Page Layout tab. I always go to Page Setup, then Header/Footer, and add my company name and a confidentiality statement. I also like to set my margins to 0.25 inches and center the page horizontally. Another important setting is the page fit, which I always set to one page wide by "blank" pages tall. These may seem like small changes, but they can make a big difference in the long run.

But it's not just about the Page Layout tab. You can also customize other settings, such as the color of your pivot tables and cell styles. And the best part is, you can save all of these customizations in a special workbook that you can use as a template for all future workbooks.

To do this, start with a blank workbook and make all of your favorite customizations. Then, save it as either an XLTM or XLTX file, depending on whether or not you use macros. Be sure to save it in the %APPDATA% Microsoft\excel\XLStart folder, with two names: "Book" and "Sheet". This way, whenever you create a new workbook or insert a new worksheet, it will inherit the settings from your customized workbook.

Now, here's where things get a little frustrating. When you open Excel, you're brought to the Start screen, which offers a "Blank workbook" option. But this is not your customized workbook - it has its own settings. To avoid this, simply press Esc to go to a blank workbook with your custom settings, or go to File, Options, and select "don't show me the Start screen anymore".

This tip may seem small, but over time, it can save you countless hours of having to make the same customizations over and over again.
