(14 Dec 2019) A group of gay rights activists gathered in front of Mexico's Fine Arts Museum on Friday to show their support for artist Fabian Chairez and his controversial Zapata painting.
The painting is on display at the museum as part of the "Zapata after Zapata" exhibition, that covers 100 years of visual representations of the peasant leader.
It portrays Emiliano Zapatas naked on a horse, in an effeminate pose and wearing high heels.
The artwork has enraged farmers groups who say it denigrates the Mexican revolutionary hero and have vowed to hold protests from Monday and continue demonstrations until the painting is removed.
Gay rights activist argue it is an expression of free speech and should be allowed to remain on display.
Mexico's Ministry of Culture has indicated that the painting will not be removed.
