Multiprocessing – Description
Subject: Computer Organization & Architecture
Semester: BCA – 3rd Semester

Multiprocessing refers to the ability of a computer system to support more than one processor (CPU) for simultaneous processing. In a multiprocessing environment, multiple CPUs share the system’s memory and other resources to perform multiple tasks concurrently, increasing performance, throughput, and reliability.

Key Features:
Parallel Processing: Multiple processors execute different parts of a program or different programs simultaneously.

Shared Memory: All processors access the same main memory, enhancing coordination and data exchange.

Improved Speed and Efficiency: Tasks are completed faster due to division of labor among processors.

Fault Tolerance: If one processor fails, others can continue functioning.

Types of Multiprocessing Systems:
Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP):
All processors are treated equally and share the workload equally.

Asymmetric Multiprocessing (AMP):
One processor is the master, and the others are slaves – the master assigns tasks.

Advantages:
Faster execution of programs

Better system reliability

Efficient utilization of system resources

Applications:
Servers and mainframes

Modern operating systems (e.g., Linux, Windows)
