Chinese workers have hoisted and installed the last stayed-cable tower on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the world's longest cross-sea bridge, at the sea near the city of Zhuhai in south China's Guangdong Province on Thursday.

Nicknamed "Dolphin Tower" for its shape of a dolphin, the tower, the last one on the bridge under construction, is now sitting on the foundation at the Lingdingyang, a channel of the Pearl River Estuary with large ports including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Hong Kong and Macao.

The hoist operation took 10 hours from 03:00 on early Thursday, using two floating crane and a cargo ship. The vessels hoisted the tower, which is 105 meters high and 3,000 kilograms heavy, and turned to be erected in the air it before placing it on the foundation.

The tower was hoisted through the narrow space between the crane arms, which is an engineering challenge worldwide.

"Our hoist operation is unprecedented in the history of bridges and in the world," said Wang Zhongwen, the chief engineer of Guangdong Changda Highway Engineering Co. Ltd.

"The successful hoist of the tower enables us to link the whole bridge by July. It has also laid a solid foundation for the bridge's opening to traffic next year," said Yang Shaoxi, deputy manager of the Wuchuan Shipbuilding Industry Group Co. Ltd..
