A behind-the-scenes detail from The Dark Knight Rises shows how far Christopher Nolan went to keep action scenes practical. For Blake’s car stunt, the goal was to make the moment look completely unexpected and real on camera.

Stunt driver George Cottle explained that special effects teams hid a pipe ramp directly into the ground. As he drove toward it, the street looked totally flat with no visible ramp at all. Cottle said it was one of the trickiest stunts he had ever done because he could not see the launch point until it was too late. The result was a moment that felt tense and believable without relying on heavy CGI.
