Grinding your way through shifting a manual transmission is practically a right of passage. But is it unavoidable? And why does it happen? The 3-speed in Craig Cole’s early Ford V8 works almost exactly the same way as a modern manual, but there are some quirks to be aware of. One of these is that you can’t immediately shift into either first or reverse gear without waiting a few seconds or the gearbox will grind. But, with the right technique you can change gears, seamlessly and quickly. Craig spells it all out in this video with a real transmission to demonstrate what’s going on when you’re shifting, and he shares a few ways to avoid this annoying and potentially dangerous noise, which can cause damage if you’re not careful.
