The iconic Gibson J-45 was first produced during the fraught war years of 1942, but the “unassuming” little acoustic flourished, inspiring music-culture luminaries such as Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Donovan, Buddy Holly, Elizabeth Cotton, David Gilmour, Keb’ Mo’, Bruce Springsteen, Aimee Mann, Slash, James Taylor and two chaps named Elvis (Presley and Costello).

The new Gibson J-45 Studio acoustic-electric celebrates the model’s glorious legacy—and preserves its sweet midrange tones that caress and showcase vocals—but adds some savvy enhancements to improve playability and make live performances easy and fun. The onboard LR Baggs Element under-saddle pickup system is prized for its transparent reproduction of an acoustic’s organic sound—as well as the fact there’s no brittle piezo-transducer “quackiness” to worry about. The J-45 Studio also includes Gibson’s satin-finished Advanced Response utile (hardwood) neck, which guarantees a fast, comfy feel whether you’re fingerpicking, strumming or shredding up and down the fingerboard. Adorned with a Sitka spruce top and walnut back and sides, the Gibson J-45 Studio delivers gorgeous, vintage-styled tone and projection, while a TUSQ nut and saddle ensures spot-on intonation. The Gibson Studio Series also includes the SJ-200 Studio, Hummingbird Studio and L-00 Studio.

To detail the attributes of the Gibson J-45 Studio is renowned indie-folk storyteller and singer-songwriter Noah Gundersen, who prizes the guitar’s versatility for composing at home and taking on the road, as well as for producing a beautiful, balanced tone for both strumming and fingerpicking. “That flexibility is why I gravitated to the J-45 in the first place,” says Gundersen. “It’s just a workhorse of an instrument.”
