How to Get Rid of Text Neck

Text neck or tech neck is a position of the spine and rib cage characterized by a small hump at the top of the upper back/lower neck.

This unsightly hump is associated with the following:

1. A forward head (anterior weight shift of the upper back, neck and head)
2. Flattened mid back
3. A depressed sternum

Some of the potential long term effects of this posture could be neck and shoulder pain and dysfunction.

The problem with correcting this position is that many of the exercises that are commonly recommended actually enhance the flattened mid back and the forward weight shift in the neck, upper back and head. These would include shoulder blade squeezes or exercises that involve traditional spinal extension.

Credit to Bill Hartman for these exercises and concepts.

In this video, we discuss how this position evolves and the steps we need to take to reposition the upper body to reduce the progression of text neck.
