R.I.P CRAIG MACK.
Today’s feature is the story of a rapper that had a special opportunity to become one of the biggest rap artist of the 90s. When I say opportunity, none came like it did for Craig Mack. His biggest, most unexpected was meeting Sean Combs aka Puffy for the first time outside a club and was asked to freestyle over Mary J’s you don’t have to worry beat in exchange for a chance to sign with upstart label bad boy records. After wowing Sean Combs, he was placed on the song and the rest was history. He’s credited for providing Bad Boy with their first hit record, “Flava In Ya Ear”, followed by a remix that arguably jump started the careers of Biggie Smalls and Busta rhymes. The original version went on to go platinum, nominated for a grammy for best rap solo performance in 1995 and was even featured in the 2021 Space Jam. In 94 95 Craig Mack was on top of the world as his song played all over the world. He wasn’t the rapper with the most bars or the rapper with the craziest flow or smoothest MC, but when Craig Mack got on a song, you knew it was him and you knew it had potential to go all the way. You hear a lot of stories about the music industry and the politics played within it that not only hinder, in this case stunt careers, and Craig Mack was no different. In fact he may have been one of the first artist with his grammy nominated potential to be blackballed in hip hop. In a 90s era, where talent more so than image got you on, Craig could’ve been one of the era’s biggest artist. Here are 3 reasons why that didn’t happen.
