For 72 hours, Japanese interrogators tortured him - pulling teeth, breaking fingers, burning flesh. On the fourth night, his guards got drunk on sake. Keith dislocated his broken thumb to slip his bonds, then killed 15 Japanese soldiers with his bare hands, including strangling the commanding officer with his own sword belt. Despite 97 separate wounds, he traveled 40 miles through hostile jungle to reach American lines. General MacArthur personally decorated him, declaring: This man is worth an entire battalion. Keith lived to age 98, passing away peacefully in 2019.
