Bluegrass Ramblers 1965 Battle of College Bands Championship

昭和37年僕の兄大塚泰は桃山学院大学に入学すると直ちに軽音楽部に入部し、カントリー・バンド「ピーチ・マウンテン・ボーイズ」にギターとボーカルで参加した。しかしこのバンドは一年後に解散してしまい、泰兄貴は丁度入学して来た一回生フィドルの田淵章二さん（柔道部に入りたかったと聞いてる）とマンドリンとバンジョーの芝田光雄さんを勧誘し、同じ軽音のジャズのバンドからベースの関考人さんを借りてブルーグラス・ランブラーズを昭和38年に結成した。やがて西岡良治さんがギターとボーカルで入団して、関さんの代わりに祭義峰さんがベースで参加。

泰兄貴は二年後に退団したので、芝田さん、田淵さん、西岡さん、祭さんの四人編成になったランブラーズは昭和40年大橋巨泉司会の人気ラジオ番組「大学対抗バンド合戦」（コカ・コーラ提供）に出場し、ロック、ジャズ、ハワイアン、カントリー、フォーク、そして他のブルーグラス・バンドなどを抑えて関西地区で優勝した。東京地区の優勝は伝統ある早稲田大学のジャズバンド、ハイ・ソサエティで、中部地区は南山大学のラテン・グループ、トリオモレーノ。この3バンドの決勝戦は日本全国にテレビ放映され、ご覧のようにランブラーズが全国優勝しました。

ここで優勝した事によってランブラーズはブルーグラスと桃山学院大学の名前を(昭和34年創校だから出来立てだった)日本中に広めました。改めて芝田さん、田淵さん、西岡さん、祭さん、そして泰兄貴、おめでとう御座います。

When my brother, Yutaka Otsuka, entered Momoyama Gakuin University in Osaka, Japan in 1962, he joined a Country band called “Peach Mountain Boys” of school’s music club – the name Momoyama translates to Peach Mountain. However, they disbanded after one year so Yutaka recruited a couple of freshmen (fiddler Shoji Tabuchi and banjoist Mitsuo Shibata) and “Bluegrass Ramblers” was born in ‘63. A Jazz bassist Takahito Seki filled in initially but eventually Yoshimine Sai replaced him and Ryoji Nishioka joined as a second guitarist/vocalist. When Yutaka left the group two years later, the Ramblers consisted of Shibata, Tabuchi, Nishioka and Sai.

In 1965 the Ramblers entered a prestigious radio program "Battle of College Bands" sponsored by Coca Cola and they won the semi-final for Osaka region beating Jazz, Rock, Hawaiian, Country, Folk and other Bluegrass groups. Other finalists were a legendary Jazz band “High Society” of Waseda University from Tokyo and a Latin band “Trio Moreno(?)” of Nanzan University from Nagoya. The final championship was broadcast on national network TV and as you see here the Bluegrass Ramblers won the national championship.

By winning this championship, the Ramblers popularized Bluegrass and made young (established in 1959) Momoyama Gakuin University famous all over Japan. Again congratulations to Shibata, Tabuchi, Nishioka, Sai and also to my brother Yutaka. Many of you know that Shoji Tabuchi eventually moved to US and now he runs a very successful show in Branson, MO.
