SKIN CARE TIPS- DIY Derma roller
Dermarolling or skin needling is a form of microneedling. This can be classed as generation one microneedling and is over 2 decades old. This entry level treatment is still effective for minor corrections of skin texture. Dermarolling can be used to teat very early and mild forms of acne scarring and chicken pox scars. Mild acne scar types that can respond to microneedling include shallow box car scars, mild atrophic acne scars, and rolling acne scars. It should not be used to treat red or brown acne scars. This treatment can also reduce skin pore sizing, as well as fine lines and wrinkles. The safest dermarolling or skin needle length ranges from 0.25 to 0.5 mm. Longer skin needles can cause paradoxical skin scars, and even traumatize nerves and blood vessels. Needling can be performed using a variety of devices including Dermarollers, Dermapen, CIT or Collagen Induction Therapy devices, and many variations of skin rollers. The brand does not matter, however the more needles the better- I recommend skin rollers with more than 240 needles, titanium tip, single use only. They can be found on ebay for $5 to $10. This video is designed to save you money and perform this procedure safely at home.
The fundamental difference between skin needling or dermarollers and laser, is that light energy is not used in microneedling and no heat is generated.
Microneedling –skin needling can be divided into two main types- energy microneedling and non-energy based microneedling. Examples of energy based microneedling devices include Infini, Profound, ePrime, Venus Viva, Vivace, Intracel, Intensif and Secret. These provide micro columns of injury in the deep layer of the skin, as well as controlled heating via a process called RF or radiofrequency. I only perform fourth generation skin needling using insulated energy based RF devices like INFINI micro-needling as well as third generation devices like Instensif.
Here is my suggestion for how to perform safe dermarolling or skin needling at home.
1. Photos are vitally important to assess your progress and to see if this treatment is suitable for you. Take high resolution of your acne scars or skin condition under direct and indirect lighting. Photos are vital to gauge progress.
2. Buy a dermaroller as a cheap alternative to a medical grade microneedling device. Choose a 0.25 – 0.5 256 needle dermaroller. Don’t go deeper than this for home use!
3. Use a medical grade disinfectant like Chlorhexidine. Avoid microneedling to active zits, pimples, acne or acne cysts as they may contain contaminated pus with bacteria.
4. Apply the numbing cream for one hour before the procedure.
5. Wipe off numbing cream and re-wipe with the disinfectant.
6. Have someone in sterile gloves provide counter traction and roll your acne scars. Expect to bleed as scars lie in your dermis. Roll 3-6 times with firm pressure. Change direction, ie. Rotate 90 degrees, then roll another 3-6 times. Apply firm pressure for 2-3 minutes to stop the bleeding.
7. Apply a emollient such as QV intensive or a bland moisturizer.
8. Start using active creams 2-4 days after the procedure. More experienced users can infuse skin vitamins and copper peptides straight after skin needling.
9. Repeat the process 3- 6 weeks later, intervals will depend on your needle depth, the number of passes, pressure, and your healing time.
10. Retake photos, compare after 5 sessions.
Remember – home microneedling is just a gentle treatment for mild skin concerns. Moderate to severe acne scars, wrinkles and pores will not respond to this simple DIY treatment. This is where fourth generation RF devices and lasers can be helpful. I hope you find these skin care tips, skin care routines and skin product reviews helpful.
