A trauma-informed approach enables us to work sensitively, respecting each survivor's unique needs while minimizing the risk of retraumatization. To understand this approach, let’s look at its key principles.
The first principle is safety. A person who has experienced violence needs to feel that they are no longer in danger—physically or emotionally. This includes creating a predictable environment where they have control over what happens to them. Safety is crucial not only during the initial contact but throughout the entire support process. Professionals must ensure open communication and clearly explain the steps they plan to take.
The second principle is trust. Survivors need to feel that they can share their experiences without fear of judgment or misuse of their information. This means always respecting their privacy and seeking their consent before taking any further steps. It is also essential to accept their reactions and normalize their emotions, as everyone responds differently. For example, crying should not be discouraged—it is a natural expression of emotions.
Finally, there is autonomy. Trauma often strips survivors of their sense of control over their lives. Our task is to help them regain that sense of control, for instance, by giving them the space to make decisions about their next steps. Supporting autonomy involves respecting their boundaries and empowering their ability to make independent decisions, which helps rebuild their confidence and trust.
When working with SGBV survivors, it is essential to use sensitive and empathetic communication that avoids assigning blame or creating feelings of guilt. Focus on questions and approaches that encourage openness and sharing without causing the survivor to feel pressured or uncomfortable. Active listening and respecting their boundaries are also key components.
Every survivor is unique. There is no universal approach. Always consider their individual needs, cultural background, and life experiences. This is particularly important when working with migrant women. In practice, this means being prepared to collaborate with interpreters or community representatives who can help overcome language and cultural barriers.
A trauma-informed approach is not just a method of working—it is a way of treating people with empathy and respect. Every professional has the opportunity to support survivors on their path to recovery by creating a safe environment, building trust, and empowering their autonomy. Remember, the foundation of effective support lies in listening and acting with sensitivity.
