My name is Rick Salter and I am a Student Safety Specialist at Lightspeed Systems.

I’ve worked for the Human Review team for two years. Our team is there to look at all the safeguarding cases, 24x7, especially outside of school hours and at the weekends.

Due to the latest Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance, DSLs are required to have a more proactive approach for safeguarding online. The Human Review team offers that extra layer of support.

One case that really stood out for me was a year seven student writing a suicide note in a Google document. Within the suicide note, she was typing things like, “Everyone hates me!,” “this is my final goodbye,” and “I’m going to kill myself.” These are the phrases that triggered the alert.

During my investigation, I discovered she’s also searching for self-harm imagery, local bridges, and other alarming material. So, I contacted the first person on their escalation tree that was a DSL and handed over all the relevant information, including screenshots and a timeline of the events.

A few hours later, the DSL reached out to me and said that they managed to intervene and gave her the help that she needed.

It’s cases like this that make me really proud to be part of this team.

I truly believe in Lightspeed’s mission to support schools and help their students who could be at risk.
