The blastocyst is a structure formed in the early development of mammals. It possesses an inner cell mass (ICM) which subsequently forms the embryo. The outer layer of the blastocyst consists of cells collectively called the trophoblast. This layer surrounds the inner cell mass and a fluid-filled cavity known as the blastocoel. The trophoblast gives rise to the placenta.
The blastocyst is a single cell layer thick except at one pole, where the cells form into a disc that is two cell layers thick.
Blastocyst-stage embryos consist of two distinct cell types: trophectoderm (TE), which forms extraembryonic tissues, and the inner cell mass (ICM), which develops into both fetal and extraembryonic tissues. The ICM cells exposed to the fluid cavity (blastocoele) are hypoblasts, which develop into extraembryonic membranes. The epiblast cells in the middle of the ICM develop into fetal tissue. Human ES cells arise from an outgrowth of ICM cells, but interestingly are able to make both embryonic and trophoblast in vitro.
