STORYLINE:
Animal rights activists marched through the streets of Mexico City on Saturday, calling for lawmakers to ban bullfighting.
About two-hundred demonstrators, some wearing animal costumes and masks, headed for Zocalo Square in the heart of the city.
Some of those taking part waved banners and chanted "criminal, murderers, those whom kill an animal."
Demonstrator Roberto Gonzalez said bullfighting belongs to the "dark ages" and tradition alone is not a good reason to allow it to continue.
"We have no right to inflict suffering on any living being just for fun," he added.
Bullfighting is a popular tradition in Mexico.
The number of events staged is second only to Spain, where the practice was banned in the Catalonia region earlier this year.
France has declared bullfighting a part of its intangible historical and artistic heritage, although it is only popular in the south at historical fairs in cities like Nimes.
Portugal allows bullfighting but unlike in Spain and France, the bull is not killed in the ring.
The Spanish tradition is also upheld in the Latin American countries of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
However, in Ecuador, President Rafael Correa recently passed a law prohibiting the slaughter of a bull in the ring.
