Buka has, in its relatively short existence (it opened in 2003), become something of an institution in Accra. It is the go-to spot for semi-fine African dining in the city.

While Accra is by no means short of delicious local food joints, which come in the form of makeshift “chop bars”, sizzling on the side of the road, and of course cooking in most homes, Buka offers the chance to eat African food, in a slightly more formal – and less hectic – environment.

It is located in the heart of the central Osu area, where much of the city’s social activities take place. The restaurant is set on the second floor or a small building and is partially covered and part open air. Come lunchtime or dinner, Buka makes for a breezy spot, where you may briefly shake off the heat and enjoy your food.

While the dishes on the menu predominantly hail from Ghana, Buka also serves up favourites from across West Africa: Nigeria, Cote D'Ivoire, Senegal and Togo included.

Be sure to try Ghanaian classics such as Red Red stew (with beans, and either meat or fish), or Kontonmire stew (spinach based), to be eaten alongside the likes of fried plantain or yam. Another staple choice not to be missed is the Jollof Rice, which is a core feature of both Ghanaian and Nigerian cuisine.

The food at Buka is certainly not light, or diet-friendly, however, you will not regret each flavour filled bite.

Another great Buka selling point is that it’s open every day – meaning you can always rely on it to get your fix. It is best to reserve in advance, however, the likelihood is that you will get a table either way. waakye stew fufu jollof rice ghana plantain fufu
