Trump built the tariff border wall, can American consumers afford to pay for it? There are so many products from around the world that will now have a tariff, from food, energy, coffee, cars, industrial products, and the like, how long and how much can the average American consumer afford to pay for these inflationary costs via the tariffs? Historically, there is ample evidence that high tariffs do not work, but it's a bold opportunity to try it again. If Americans decide to be patriotic and suck up these high artificial tariff costs over the next few years and pay down federal debt, this might just work. If the stock market keeps crashing and inflationary prices keep climbing, there may be a political price to pay for this at the very least. And, if things get deflationary, the Fed may have to lower interest rates, setting up a new cycle of corporate America buying real estate and other investments. This will inevitably allow the rich to get richer, which may be good, depending where you are in the socioeconomic ladder.
The English speaking world mostly got off quite easy on these tariffs: UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada got off relatively easy so we will see how the retaliatory tariffs work out over time.
