Miramar Police officers accompanied 50 underprivileged and/or deserving children to Walmart as part of the annual “Shop with a Cop” program. The department has been a part of this holiday event since 1996.
Children between the ages of five and 12 were provided with a $50 gift card, donated by Walmart. They were allowed to spend it as they wish. The children are selected by school resource officers, working with school staff. Officers volunteer their time to keep track of spending and to help the kids with gift ideas. Although children are encouraged to treat themselves, in the past some have instead purchased gifts for other members of their family.
“Shop with a Cop” was established to provide a happier holiday season to deserving kids and to build positive relationships between law enforcement officers and the children of the community. The program provides a positive experience not only for the kids involved, but also for the officers.
