Relics from the early Universe showering down at the speed of light.

An astrophysicist and professor in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago, Angela Olinto works in particular on the strongest cosmic rays. From balloon to balloon, with a little help from laser beams, she has endeavored to simulate what could be seen by the JEM telescope to be installed on the EUSO observatory on the International Space Station, looking down towards the Earth: ultra-high energy cosmic rays revealing themselves through fluorescent showers of particles, possible messengers from the very first moments of the Universe after the Big Bang.

Astrophysicienne, professeur au département d’astronomie et d’astrophysique de l’Université de Chicago, Angela Olinto étudie en particulier les plus puissants des rayons cosmiques. D’un ballon à l’autre et grâce à quelques faisceaux laser, elle a entrepris de simuler ce que verra un jour le télescope JEM installé dans l’observatoire astronomique EUSO à bord de la Station spatiale internationale (ISS), en regardant en direction de la Terre : des rayons cosmiques d’ultra haute énergie se dévoilant sous forme de pluies de particules fluorescentes, messagers éventuels des tout premiers moments de l’Univers après le Big Bang.
