Cherries and other stone fruit are often out of reach in warm climates because of required "chill hours". These often require a winter chill hour count of 600-800 hours at temps between 32 and 45 degrees F. That would NEVER work in a warm climate like Southern California where we usually get only a couple hundred chill hours. That has changed! I planted a couple recently introduced "low chill" cherry trees named "Royal Lee" and "Minnie Royal", who reliably produce with 200-300 chill hours and pollinate each other. In this video, I share more on how this works, as well as planting the new "Royal Crimson" cherry which serves as another pollinator for both other cherries, as well as producing a great crop itself.

Planting low chill cherry trees makes growing your own cherry accesible in a warm climate like Southern California. Learning how to grow cherries isn't that much different than other stone fruit. For our climate the cherry tree we selected is "minnie royal" cherry along with a "Royal lee" cherry tree. In this video I planted a royal crimson sold by Dave Wilson Nursery. Using cherry tree pruning, I made room for the royal crimson cherry, in the same grouping as minnie royal lee cherry. Keeping the trees so close is high density planting, sometimes called backyard orchard culture (similar to what's seen on iv organic or with DWN's Tom Spellman). My orchard no has 60 or so orchard trees, and all are orchard fruit trees. The Minnie royal cherry tree is used for cherry pollination which is a must when planting cherry trees like minnie royal. A backyard orchard is so rewarding, filling up the space with tasty fruit trees. If you haven't been planting fruit trees in backyard, don't feel intimidated. Just plan on a couple and do it!
