James Blount was born in England to a mother who ran a ski chalet and a father who was a cavalry officer and helicopter pilot in the Army Air Corps. He traveled around England as a child as his father's postings changed and received a degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Bristol. Sponsored through university on an army bursary, James served four years in the armed forces and rose to the rank of captain. In 1999, Blunt deployed with NATO to Kosovo, working ahead of the front lines, locating and targeting Serbian forces. His NATO commander, Wesley Clark, ordered this his unit forcibly take Pristina Airport from the Russians, and James refused, saying they were "not going to start World War Three for you". In Kosovo, James took his guitar strapped to the outside of his tank and would perform for locals and troops. While there, he wrote the song "No Bravery". He extended his military service in 2000 for the Queen's Guard and stood at the Queen Mother's coffin as she lay in state in 2002. He captained the Household Cavalry alpine ski team in Switzerland and became the Royal Armoured Corps giant slalom champion in 2000. In 2002, at 28, he left the military to pursue a music career. 4 Non Blondes' Linda Perry heard his promo tape and got him to sign a record contract. James recorded his debut in 2003, and despite the single "High", it attracted little critical attention. But "You're Beautiful" was his breakout hit, reaching #1 on the Hot 100 in 2006, the first British artist to do so since Elton John in 1997 (fittingly, with his tribute to Diana). The album sold over 11 million copies and entered the Guinness Book for the fastest selling album in one year. I never much liked "You're Beautiful", but I did love "Wisemen", despite it having been prominently featured on Starbucks soundtracks and airwaves in the mid 2000s.
