Our contemporary culture of networking is causing our politics to become increasingly competitive and detached. Networking has become a barrier to progress and continues to prevent people, especially youth and people of colour, from entering certain spaces. To generate a better political future, we must change the way we connect with others -- building genuine relationships instead of simply swapping business cards. Navneet Gidda is a fourth year undergraduate student at the University of Alberta who serves as the current President of the Political Science Undergraduate Association, Vice President of the University of Alberta New Democrats, and Constituency Assistant for The Honourable Rachel Notley. Over the course of her degree, Navneet has dedicated herself to opening spaces for youth to share in diverse political dialogue and generating opportunities for students to grow outside the academic realm. Paving the path for women in politics, Navneet leads a team of all female executives on her department association, was selected to represent her riding at last year’s ‘Daughters of the Vote’ conference in Ottawa, and spent this past summer as an Advocacy Intern in Washington, DC. As a leader, Navneet is committed to being a voice for marginalized communities and empowering fellow people of colour to run for political office.
