Paisley South By-election Special

Описание к видео Paisley South By-election Special

On 6 November 1997 there was a byelection in Paisley South constituency. The seat was held by Labour but the sitting MP, Gordon McMaster, had killed himself - partly due to feuding within the local Labour Party. After a difficult campaign, Labour successfully defended the seat - the winning candidate Douglas Alexander later served in the Cabinet.

Here is the entire by-election special programme, which began at five minutes past midnight on Friday 7 November. Presented by Kirsty Wark, with analysis by Brian Taylor and Robin Oakley, and John Pienaar at the count. The result comes unexpectedly early (starts 02:37). The studio panel is unusually high-level: Donald Dewar (Secretary of State for Scotland), Alex Salmond (leader of the Scottish National Party), Jim Wallace (Leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats) and Raymond Robertson (Chairman of the Scottish Conservatives).

Oh, and who's that on the edge of shot from 26:40 ?
