Soldering a TSOP4838 infrared sensor to an ESP8266

In this video, we solder a TSOP4838 infrared sensor to an ESP8266 microcontroller and put it in a nice 3d printed case.

This video is part of a series on triggering home automations with Magiquest magic wands, but this combo could be used to control anything in your smart home with any infrared transmitter (i.e. TV remote, etc..).

This video serves as both a how-to guide for connecting your IR sensor to your ESP8266 wemos D1 mini -like microcontroller, and also as a general soldering guide. We discuss tip maintenance, tip cleaning and flux types. It includes a nice mistake (accidentally bridging two pins) while fighting with the camera being in the way, and the corresponding recovery. We also discuss identifying cold solder joints, show you what they look like (with an example) and I show you how to fix a cold solder joint.
