It is known that Aaron Beck, before founding cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), had had a psychodynamic training and was on his way to a career as a psychoanalyst. Arthur Freeman and Giovanni M. Ruggiero will discuss the emphasis in CBT on cognitive patterns and beliefs as to whether it depends not only on the influence of the cognitive models of Bandura, Neisser and Markus, but also on Beck’s psychoanalytic background. Initially, Beck had a psychodynamic training influenced both by the interpersonal tradition of Horney and Sullivan and by the American ego psychology developed by Anna Freud (1936/1966) and Hartmann, Kris and Loewenstein (1964). In these two psychodynamic orientations it was assumed that the human mind has conscious adaptive functions called ego functions not influenced by aggressive and libidinal conflictual drives (Rosner, 2014a, 2014b). In short, the psychodynamic ego plays a key organizational role in mental activity that seems similar to the structural role played in cognition by beliefs about the self in Beck’s CBT model
