This video provides a broad overview of the development of Southern California's water supply with a specific emphasis on how it affected Castaic, Saugus, Newhall, Valencia, Stevenson Ranch, and Canyon Country as part of the Santa Clarita Valley. It includes discussion of the Los Angeles Aqueduct, the St. Francis Dam, and William Mulholland and Frederick Eaton.

Water has played a central role in the development of Santa Clarita. The Los Angeles Aqueduct, which opened on November 5, 1913, runs directly through Santa Clarita, and its terminal point is just south of the community at the entrance of the San Fernando Valley.

In 1923, the St. Francis Dam, a reservoir designed to provide Los Angeles with water during periods of drought, failed spectacularly, rushing through the Santa Clarita Valley and through to Ventura where it finally reached the ocean. It was the single greatest engineering disaster in California history.

However, because Santa Clarita was such a vital part of LA's water infrastructure, additional reservoirs were built in 1934 and 1973.
