Two car diesel suburban rail cars 3102/3101 arrive at Adelaide's Showground railway station from the city during the Tuesday morning peak. A three car electric suburban set also arrives on adjacent platform heading to the city.

Adelaide still operates diesel rail cars as a suburban service, although electric traction is steadily catching up as more lines are electrified. The diesel rail cars number 70 0in all with the first 20 being built by Comeng at Dandenong, Victoria between 1987 and 1988. Final fit out of the cars was performed at Comeng's facility at Dry Creek SA. The first one entered service in November 1987.

The basic car design is based on the Melbourne suburban electric Comeng cars.

A further 50 cars were sought from Comeng, but the company was in the middle of being sold to ABB and the order was given to Martin & King at Somerton, Victoria, a subsidiary of Clyde Engineering. The same design was used and all were delivered between 1992 & 1996.

Originally powered by a Stromberg diesel engine, they were later replaced by a V8 Mercedes Benz OM502LA engine. The sets are diesel electric and use Knorr-Bremse braking system.

Currently the diesel rail cars are used on the Belair, Grange and Outer Harbour lines and will be still around for a few years yet. They give a very quiet and comfortable ride and are generally well liked by crews and the travelling public.
