Greetings from Omaha. My name is Greg Mamula and I serve as the Executive Minister to the American Baptist Churches of Nebraska. It is my great joy and honor to be invited to participate in worship with Brewster Baptist Church on Sunday, July 7. The sermon text for this Sunday will be from Luke 4:14-30 and is called “For the Oppressed and the Oppressor.
There is no denying that our times are difficult, and the challenges we wrestle with are daunting. However, I would like us to challenge the popular notion that our modern experiences with polarization are somehow unique or unprecedented and consider that our desire to simplify complex issues has always been part of human nature. To help us navigate such times, we will look at how Jesus, in Luke 4, defied simplistic narratives with his claim to fulfill Isaiah 61 as Messiah in ways different from popular expectation. He proclaimed God’s grace for everyone, including outsiders and oppressors, which shocked and angered his own community. His message calls us to reject polarization and embrace a deeper, inclusive grace. Our challenge is to participate in God’s redemptive work, healing divisions and embodying love in a complex world.
