ADHD does not always look the same, and the differences between its subtypes often show up along gender lines. By contrast, inattentive ADHD is more common in girls and is characterized by symptoms like daydreaming, disorganization, forgetfulness, and difficulty sustaining focus. Because these signs are quieter and more internalized, they are often overlooked or mistaken for personality quirks, shyness, or lack of effort. As a result, many females do not receive an ADHD diagnosis until adulthood, when academic, work, or life pressures make the underlying challenges impossible to ignore. This delay highlights how the subtler, internalized presentation of ADHD can lead to years of struggle without recognition or support.
