As Canada moves towards a low-carbon future, organizations like the Hamilton Health Sciences hospital system are taking a leadership role in energy transition.

To meet new provincial and federal guidelines for carbon reduction, HHS chose to upgrade their power generation capabilities. With assistance from Toromont Cat’s in-house engineering group, a total of thirteen Cat G3516H generators were installed at two locations.

“We wanted something that we knew had good product support, and that had an excellent track record,” said Chris Cuthbert, Manager of Cogeneration & Energy at Hamilton Health Services.

These high-efficiency, combined heat and power units are only operating during peak periods, and have already reduced the hospital system’s carbon footprint by 50%. Waste heat is being utilized for cost-effective cooling during the summertime, making HHS even more resilient, year-round.

Toromont will provide long-term product support, to ensure that HHS, their 300,000 annual patients, and the environment receive the full benefit of the new power system.
