Natacha Atlas was born in Brussels to an English mother and a Sephardic Jewish father originally from Morocco. She grew up in a Moroccan suburb of Brussels where she was heavily influenced by Arab culture, including its beautiful dance form, raqs sharki, better known as bellydance. She moved to London as a teenager becoming the singer of the technopop band, Transglobal Underground and at times collaborating with Jah Wobble. Fusing her musical roots with her electronic experience, she gave her music a modern, dance-inspiring, ambient dub quality.

Understanding the importance of Egypt as a center of Arabic music, she moved to Cairo recently to immerse herself in her ancestry and improve her musical and linguistic skills. While Atlas has been a popular singer and songwriter on the world music circuit, her presence in Egypt has earned her a local popularity that is hard to earn for a musician who lives outside of the country. Egyptians and other Arabs are giving in to Natacha’s hypnotic voice and the fusion of music elements that seem to fit perfectly in the smoke-filled, happening spots of Cairo and other Arabic cities.

In “Kidda (This Way),” Atlas sings of the pain of being scorned in love. “Why do I love you my sweet heart like this / Why did you make me love you and then leave me / Why is it so easy for you to send my love a death sentence / One day, my heart will have the justice that it deserves.”The track was remixed by Transglobal Underground, who supports Atlas’s ethereal vocals with a pumping drum beat and funky bass line, as well as with elements of the South Asian pop style bhangra.
