As we climb the corporate ladder, many high-performing executives look beyond the C-suite with their eyes on a bigger prize: paid board positions.
A study by Harvard Business Review concluded that serving on a board increases an executive’s likelihood of being promoted as a first-time CEO to an S&P 1500 firm by 44%, their increase their annual pay by 13%.

And though some see a board director position as cushy gig with minimal time commitments, research has shown that directors spends 200 hours a year on board work. In addition, the average paid board positions pays about $70,000 and upwards of $200,000, with the potential for stock awards.

But with great reward, comes great responsibility. Board members must answer to their em, employees and internal and external stakeholders and navigate the complexities of corporate laws and governance complexities. It takes planning and strategy to win a seat in the boardroom.
Lisa Shallet did what most deemed impossible in the early 2000s. She obtained one of the most prestigious and competitive financial roles, becoming a partner at Goldman Sachs, paving the way for future female executives. She served as its Head of Brand Marketing and Digital Strategy, launched the firm’s first corporate image advertising campaign, and served during the financial crisis of 2008. Today, she is an advisor to startups and is on the Board of Director for AccuWeather, Bully Pulpit Interactive, and PennyMac.

She is also the founder of Extraordinary Women on Boards, a community of over 600+ women corporate board directors focused on advancing board excellence, modern governance, and board diversity.
