Onam Sadhya is incomplete without one dish 'Kalan'- a sour tasting preparation of curd along with vegetables like yam or raw banana.
Coconut paste balances the sour flavours from the curd.

Ingredients: Serves 5-6 people

Raw banana 2
Water 1 cup
Curd 1 1/2 cup (thick and whisked)
Black pepper 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
Red chilli 1/4 tsp
Salt as per taste
Methi seeds powder 1 tsp
Curry leaves 1 small strand

Shredded Coconut 1 cup
Green chilli 2
Jeera 1 tsp

Tempering
Mustard seeds 1 tsp
Red chill 2
Methi seeds 1/4 tsp
Curry leaves
Coconut oil 2 tsp

Preparation:

Take two raw bananas( Kerala ones ), peel, wash and chop them nicely.
In a kadai, add the chopped bananas, turmeric, red chilli powder, black pepper, salt and mix well. Then add water as much required to cook the raw banana. Boil it well.
Don't overcook or smash it.

Once cooked, add whisked curd and STIR CONTINUOUSLY so that no lumps are formed.

Grind coconut, jeera and green chilli. Add this paste to kadai in which we are cooking. Stir nicely.
Now add methi seeds powder and curry leaves. Off the 🔥

Now for tempering, in a pan add coconut oil, mustard seeds, red chilli and methi seeds. Add this to main kadai.

Our KALAN is ready to serve with hot- piping rice and papad !
