He murdered his own mother. He kicked his pregnant wife to death. He fed Christians to beasts for sport, doused them in oil, and lit them like torches to amuse his guests. He fancied himself an artist, an actor, perhaps something of a god. And yet, when Emperor Nero finally fell—abandoned by the Senate, declared an enemy of Rome, and left to take his own life in disgrace—there were those who let loose a sigh of relief, and yet there were also those who… mourned. To the aristocracy, Nero was a monster in a toga, a madman on a throne. But to the poor, the slaves, and some in the eastern provinces, he was something more: a man who challenged the old order, who gave them tax deductions and human rights, and who seemed, for all his madness, to understand them. And so in the wake of his death, the whispers began and continued long a fter. He’s not really dead. He’s only gone East. He’ll one day return.
