Forty years on, Desert Orchid still blooms in memory. I remember the first recording—Michael Kamen at the helm, arranging and producing with that mix of discipline and grandeur he carried everywhere. Kamen wasn’t just another producer; he was a musical architect, layering sound like stone and timber until the thing stood upright, breathing. His hands were equally at home in a rock arena as in front of a full orchestra. He had that sweep, that cinematic pulse.

When I think of Kamen, I don’t only think of my song, but of the films that became part of his life’s canvas—Brazil, Highlander, Die Hard, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, the long ache of Mr. Holland’s Opus, and the elegiac sweep of Band of Brothers. He was everywhere in the late eighties and nineties, the man behind the curtain who knew how to take a simple melody and turn it into an emotional landslide. And yet, when he worked with you, it wasn’t about bombast—it was about truth.

Ten years back, I revisited Desert Orchid in the basement, a different kind of bloom. This time with Elizabeth Rodriguez and Magdelys Savigne of OKAN, voices rich with the weight of Cuba and the lift of freedom, and guitarist Pavlofsky Rosario weaving in lines like desert wind. No orchestra, no Hollywood swell—just the intimacy of musicians listening to one another, breathing the song alive again.

Kamen left us too soon, in 2003, but his music still walks the corridors of memory. For me, Desert Orchid is a line drawn across decades—first with Michael, larger than life, and then pared down to the marrow, with friends in the basement. That’s the way music endures: in grandeur and in quiet, always speaking back to us.
