February 25th, 2012. Former IBF Light Welterweight & WBC Light Welterweight Champion Devon Alexander “The Great” and former WBA Light Welterweight Champion Marcos Maidana aka “El Chino” collided in a 10 rounder for their Welterweight debuts.

Prefight records; Alexander 22(13)-1, Maidana 31(29)-2.

Entering the bout, the 28 year old Maidana (who was a 1.5-1 betting underdog) had wins against notable oppositions such as DeMarcus Corley, Erik Morales, Petr Petrov, Victor Cayo & Victor Ortiz while the 25 year old Alexander had top triumphs over the likes of Andriy Kotelnik, DeMarcus Corley, Juan Urango, Junior Witter & Lucas Matthysse.

It was an action packed but one sided affair for Alexander who outlanded and outworked the hard hitting Maidana to clearly win most if not every round.

In rounds 1 & 2, both fighters had their moments but Alexander was more accurate and showed a better defense.

In round 3, Alexander was cut over his right eye just like in his fights against Bradley, Matthysse & Kotelnik.

In round 6, Maidana was hurt with a right hook to the head and then with a left hand to the body which Alexander followed up with another straight left hand upstairs that appeared to have resulted in a knockdown. However, referee Steve Smoger ruled it a slip as Alexander might have have pushed Maidana down by leaning on him. With less than 30 seconds to go, Maidana managed to survive an incessant onslaught by Alexander.

In round 8, Maidana was hurt with a left hand downstairs and then rocked backward twice with fusillades of head shots.

In rounds 9 & 10, Alexander continued to tag Maidana effectively whilst evading most of his attacks.

After 30 minutes of action, Alexander was victorious via a lopsided UD10 with scores of 99-91 & 100-90 (2x).

Devon Alexander went on to become a 2 weight world champion in his next fight on October 20th 2012 with a UD12 victory over “The Knock-Out King” Randall Bailey to win the IBF Welterweight Championship.
